neighbor dies
Our downstairs neighbor died Saturday. He was only 26.
He had been wheelchair-bound since the age of 16. At 16, he jumped into a river or lake from a rope hanging from a tree branch. When he went in, he hit a large rock underwater and became paralyzed from the chest down. He could move his arms, but not his hands. He was a really nice guy. His door was always open to friends. Our 2-year old always welcomed herself in to say hi and get a hug. He usually used a manual wheelchair but had a motorized one as well. He had been using the motorized one for a couple days before he died. He even drove himself to a nearby mall to buy his father a Leatherman for father's day! He also had two cats who were free-roaming. He would often sit on his ramp in his wheelchair calling for his cats. I think what happened this time was that he felt more free, more empowered by the motorized chair to go looking for his cats himself and got into a situation he couldn't get out of. They found him behind our condo building down a slope up against a chain-link fence. I think he was sitting facing the fence and maybe didn't control his chair right and went forward instead of back. I don't know, that's just what I think may have happened. His mom said they think it may have been a heart attack or seizure. It's too bad he didn't live long enough to give his father the Leatherman. He died Saturday, Father's Day was Sunday. since 2/25/2001
